Something clicked tonight, I dont know what, but it did. I started the evening at the gym, maybe that is the secret (warm up before). I took my faithful 4 clubs the driver, hybrid, 4 iron and 9 iron to the range, the floodlights were on full on tonight, as there was instruction going on at the top end of the range so the range was well lit.
It didn't start to well, the driver was still only going about 150 yards and flying quite low through the air, after a change of clubs the swing started to come and besides the ball drifting heavily to the left i was getting some distance.
I made a bit more of an effort into getting the grip right and hit the ball of the blue tee, and was now getting the loft and distance with the 4 iron.
Time to go back the driver, with more emphasis on the grip it paid off and the driver was hitting the ball with loft and going at least 175 yards. I still had half a bucket of balls and seemed with the better grip that i was hitting the ball straightish and getting some distance and loft too. Hopefully on the next session things will start to improve.

Bad day on the range
Well I started to write this blog, then didn't get anything down. I treated myself to a driver on saturday nothing special in fact it only cost a fiver. Tonight was the first night I have had to try it out and what a disaster it was, I seem to have this problem that i hit the ball pretty much the same distance whether i'm using a driver, a hybrid or a 4 iron. Besides hitting the ball approx 150 yards, it more often than not goes off at an angle or skirts the surface and gets no loft at all.
I wasnt really feeling 100% tonight, and i suppose my performance on the range reflected that, It's dark and very windy at 1830 in Devon and the range was quite quiet. I realised soon enough that it was not going to be a good night so i only hit 50 balls. It wasn't worth hitting any more and getting the stroke all wrong.
One positive thing I have tried is to download some Golf podcasts on to my Iphone, 2 have videos and 1 is to do with the mind set of Golf. I will post on here when i decide which works the best.

Intro
Inspired by the book written by Tony Lawrence 'Hacked Off: One Man's All- out Bid to Crack the Secret of Golf'. Available from Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hacked-Off-All-out-Crack-Secret/dp/1845134605/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1256919071&sr=8-1 I have decided to start a blog of my exploits trying to break the code and get round the Golf course in a reasonable score and get a handicap!.
To introduce myself, I am 46 years old, have watched loads of golf on the TV and have gotten to old to play most sports. I have never played on a course as of yet and for the last 3 months have been taking lessons from the Golf Pro at the Portmore Golf Club, Barnstaple. The first batch of lessons (bronze course) gave the basics - grip, stance, swing and were mainly done using a 6 iron (better connection between club and ball apparently).
The second batch (silver course) concentrated on putting, pitching, chipping and the use of drivers / woods. With this course now complete it has been deemed that I am ready for the golf course.
Portmore has an 18 hole course and a 9 hole par 3 course, so the next logical step would be to go on the 9 hole course. I have acquired a number of clubs to help me in my task, I have a very good set of clubs from my step father who probably last played with them back in 86, I think the Pro thinks that was 1886, however they are ideal for me and besides the woods I seem to be striking them ok. I also have a mixture of clubs from my Partners father and some I have acquired from the local tip.
I have purchased a hybrid club to use instead of a 3 iron and a nice golf bag and as of now those are the only purchases I have made. That is with the exception of 4 how to golf books and manuals and a book on lowering your golf handicap. I also have a DVD guide to better Golf and a couple of golf monthly periodicals and of course Tony Lawrence's book.
This blog is then going to chapter my attempts to get into this game and to get my handicap
